Devon Haye, a Bachelor of Commerce graduate, embodied integrity, love, and kindness. Devon was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a young child, he lived in God’s Lake Narrows and Pukatawagan, both isolated communities in northern Manitoba, where his father was posted with the RCMP. Devon moved to Ottawa as a second-grader, but his time in Manitoba remained a part of him. As a high school graduation gift request, he asked to return to God’s Lake Narrows, to revisit elements of his childhood. It was evident that he developed a keen awareness of societal inequities from a young age. This upbringing instilled in him a strong desire to effect positive change, both through his personal life and professional career.
During his studies, Devon excelled academically and demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities, co-founding a successful web design company and earning numerous academic accolades. Despite initially considering a career in corporate law, his upbringing and the culture at McGill steered him towards a path focused on social responsibility and entrepreneurship. His passion for empowering marginalized communities led to internships in South Africa, with organizations supporting social impact entrepreneurs.
Devon was a scholar, an artist, an athlete, and an entrepreneur. He was passionate about music, about social responsibility, and about McGill. Devon was an avid traveller. He spent time in Jamaica, Greece, road tripped throughout the U.S., and studied abroad in Singapore, with stops in Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Philippines, and his favourite, Vietnam.
It was during that internship in South Africa that Devon was diagnosed with cancer. Despite the circumstances, Devon was determined to continue his social impact work. Even while undergoing treatment, he continued to pursue his studies and engage in meaningful work, embodying a spirit of perseverance and altruism. Devon maintained an undeniable charm, a great sense of humour, and an ability to see the good in all. Tragically, Devon's life was cut short at the age of 22, but his legacy lives on through initiatives like the Devon Anthony Haye Social Impact Scholarship, which honours his commitment to making the world a better place. Devon's impact extended far beyond his years, touching the lives of all who knew him and inspiring others to continue his legacy of empathy, compassion, and social responsibility.
